Baby monitors, checked: which are worth it?
Monitors come in three species: closed-loop (a private radio link between camera and parent unit — no internet, no account), WiFi app monitors (your phone is the screen, and a subscription is often the real price), and one entry here that isn't a camera at all. Only one monitor in the whole library earned a straight Worth It — and it's the $65 one. No monitor is authorized to prevent SIDS, and the range figures on the boxes are open-field math unless a lab measured otherwise; the checks separate the two. Everything below is copied from each product's own published check; prices are as checked in October 2026.
| Monitor | Price (as checked) | How it connects | The verified headline | The one-line catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Owlet Dream Sock | $299.99 list — often ~$239.99 on sale | Wearable — no camera | FDA De Novo–cleared pulse oximetry — the first of its kind | Fits only 6–30 lb (1–18 months), and it watches vitals, not video — most families still want a camera |
| Nanit Pro | $289.99 list — $231.99 on sale | WiFi app — no parent unit | The best-executed sleep analytics we've checked | Insights costs $108–$300/yr per camera after the trial — the subscription is the real price; fixed bird's-eye view, no pan or tilt |
| VTech Smart HQ Max Twin | ~$200–$225 | Both — 7″ parent unit + free app | Split-screen two-room viewing with no subscription | The "30X zoom" is digital cropping, not detail — and the buy-box price moves |
| Infant Optics DXR-8 PRO | $199.99 list — ~$169 street | Closed-loop — no WiFi, no app | The no-WiFi reliability standard, with a 720p screen | 1,000 ft is open-field math — 70 ft through walls, measured; screen-on battery is 6 hours, not the claimed 10 |
| Lollipop | $149 | WiFi app — no parent unit | Real cry discrimination; BabyGearLab's Best WiFi Monitor on a Budget | Breathing and sleep tracking cost $80–$240/yr per camera — the free plan is the deal |
| HelloBaby HB6550 | ~$65–$70 (list $99.99) | Closed-loop — no WiFi, no app | Out-ranges the $200 reference — 190 ft through 7 walls, measured — with double its screen-on battery | The picture is a dated 480p — the only real give-up |
Pick by situation
- Simple, private, cheap — and it has to just work: HelloBaby HB6550. The only straight Worth It in the monitor library, at a third of the reference model's price.
- No WiFi, but you want a sharper picture: Infant Optics DXR-8 PRO — at its ~$169 street price, not list, and with the real through-walls range in mind.
- Twins, or two rooms to watch: VTech HQ Max Twin — the big split-screen parent unit at home, the app when you're out, no subscription either way.
- You'll actually read the sleep data: Nanit Pro — the analytics are the best we've checked; just budget the $108–$300/yr Insights plan as part of the purchase price.
- Budget WiFi, with cry alerts that mean something: Lollipop at $149 — on the free plan; the paid tracking tiers are where the value leaks out.
- It's breathing anxiety, not video, keeping you up: Owlet Dream Sock — FDA-cleared vitals, inside its 6–30 lb window, with any basic camera alongside it.
