The pitch

Wirecutter’s best-swing side-to-side pick and Babylist’s SAVE pick — 6 speeds, 15 songs/sounds, 2-speed vibration and plug-in power for roughly a third of the mamaRoo’s price

The catch

the motor — Graco’s own page rates it 3.0/5 across 653 reviews, with motors dying at 1–3 months the dominant recent complaint; Graco’s direct listing is final-sale, the worst way to buy this swing

What it is — a traditional A-frame swing with one motion

A traditional A-frame powered swing with one motion — a gentle side-to-side sway — and everything else layered on top: 6 swing speeds on a dial at the top of the frame, 15 songs and sounds (10 classical melodies + 5 nature sounds), 2-speed seat vibration, a static mobile with 3 soft toys, a deep plush seat with head support and a 5-point harness. For babies 5.5–30 lbs; current colourways Abbington and Ivy. Power is dual but split: the swing and sounds run on the included AC adapter or 4 D batteries; the vibration unit runs separately on its own D battery — five D-cells for full battery operation. Not the Simple Sway LX (multi-direction seat), the 2-in-1 (detachable bouncer seat) or the Slim Spaces Compact — listings and reviews blur all four.

Claims vs reality

“Small frame design fits easily anywhere in your home”

Relative — and the least accurate headline on the box. It is narrower than the wide-legged full-size swings (MomLovesBest: “noticeably narrower”; Babylist’s SAVE pick partly on compactness), but Graco’s own spec is 30″ deep × 31″ wide × 38″ high and Wirecutter measured a 29 × 31½ in base. Owners find the base wider than a standard doorway, and it does not fold. Babylist: “take that with a grain of salt — it’ll still take up a decent amount of space in any room.” Buy it as a ~30 × 31 in piece of nursery furniture that lives in one room.

The fine print — three asterisks, and three weights for one swing

(1) No timer: no 10/20/30-minute auto-off — Wirecutter’s headline gap versus its top pick. The music stops after an hour, but the nature sounds and the swing run until you switch them off. (2) The mobile does not move: three soft toys hang static from an elastic band; “Why would you not make the mobile go around and round” is a live question on Graco’s own product page. (3) The overhead control box keeps the dial out of a toddler’s reach but “sits right in the way when putting the baby in and out.” And Graco’s own pages can’t agree on what this swing weighs: 31 lb on the Abbington page, 14.42 lb on the Ivy page, 17.2 lbs in the manual — the manual figure is the plausible one. A brand publishing three weights for one frame is telling you how far to trust its softer claims.

Safety & recalls

No CPSC recall of the Simple Sway itself (checked Oct 17, 2026). Two Graco swing stories a search surfaces are not this product: the 2025–26 speed-defect reporting and federal class action cover the Slim Spaces Compact — a different model; Graco says it has no defect and no recall has issued — and the CPSC Graco swing recall on record is from 2000, a predecessor generation. The category standard is ASTM F2088 (federal rule 16 CFR 1223). The manual’s rules: stop when the baby attempts to climb out (~9 months) or reaches 30 lbs, whichever comes first; always use the restraints, fitted snugly; “This product is not safe for sleep or unsupervised use” — if the baby falls asleep, move them to a firm, flat crib or bassinet. Under ~4 months, use the most reclined position to avoid head slump.

Real reviews — Wirecutter’s pick, Graco’s own 3.0 stars

A genuinely split product. Wirecutter names it one of its best baby swings — the side-to-side pick — Babylist makes it the SAVE pick against the $349.99 mamaRoo (check #25), and MomLovesBest rates it 4/5, its Best Plug-In Baby Swing. Amazon-mirrored pools run 4.5/5 across ~22,100–24,900 ratings (aggregated across colourways and likely the LX/2-in-1 variants). But Graco’s own page rates the Abbington 3.0/5 across 653 reviews — brand pools usually skew generous — and its most recent reviews repeat one sentence: the motor stopped, at about 1–3 months (“The motor stopped working after about 2 months”; “completely stopped working after a little over 3 months”). Target owners report the same, plus creaking that starts within weeks and swing strength that fades as the baby gains weight. When a unit works, praise is consistent: the side-to-side motion settles babies who reject front-to-back gliders, plug-in power ends battery costs, and the plush seat washes clean. The design is endorsed; the unit you receive is a quality-control lottery.

Price & FSA/HSA

$139.99 at gracobaby.com — where at check time it is marked “Final Sale” and currently not available, the single worst way to buy this product — and $139.99 at Target; Babylist lists it from $149.99. Amazon’s tracked history shows frequent drops to $119.99 with sale lows of $95.99. The realistic buy is $96–$120 on sale; never pay over list. Secondhand warning: the dominant failure is a motor dying at 1–3 months, a used unit’s remaining motor life is unknowable and there is no warranty path — buy this one new, from a retailer whose return window covers the first 90 days.
