What it is
UPPAbaby’s refresh of the 4moms mamaRoo Sleep Bassinet (UPPAbaby acquired 4moms). A motorized bassinet with 5 parent-inspired motions (Cruise, Bounce, Sway, Rock, Wave), 5 speeds, 4 sounds (Fan, Rain, Ocean, Shh), a foam-free breathable mesh mattress, full mesh sidewalls, two leg heights, an included storage basket, tool-free assembly, AC power, a 3-year warranty, and Bluetooth control from the free UPPAbaby Home app with saved presets and MotionSync (record your own rocking with your phone and the app suggests the matching motion). Size: 24.5″L × 33.8″W × 37″H — a large footprint. Use from birth to 25 lbs or 6 months; stop at the first push-up on hands and knees.
Claims vs. reality
The headline gap — there is NO cry detection and NO auto-response. Babylist’s own Q&A says it plainly: the Soma does not detect crying and respond on its own. When your baby stirs at 3 a.m., you wake up and tap the app — the Soma never answers the baby before you do. That is the whole difference from the SNOO (check #16, $1,995), which escalates motion and sound automatically. Babylist calls the Soma “SNOO-lite,” and at $599.99 it is under a third of SNOO money. The “400 combinations” claim is real arithmetic with a footnote: 5 motions × 5 speeds is 25 — the 400 counts the 4 sounds × 4 volume levels in the app too. The 8-hour continuous runtime is real and doubles the predecessor’s 4 hours, so motion runs a whole sleep stretch without a restart (it is AC-powered — 8 hours is a timer, not a battery). The breathable mesh mattress and walls are a genuine design plus for airflow and visibility, but breathability has never been shown to prevent SIDS — safe sleep is still back, flat, firm and bare. There is no subscription, no proprietary sleep sack and no sleep tracking — you can use any swaddle you already own, and nothing is paywalled.
Safety & recalls
No CPSC recall for the Soma (checked Oct 18, 2026). The UPPAbaby RIDGE stroller recall and the 4moms mamaRoo swing strap recall are different products — don’t conflate them. Certification is the strongest paper trail of any smart bassinet we have checked: UPPAbaby states the Soma is Baby Safe Alliance verified (independent lab sample-testing; the Alliance is JPMA’s successor) and GREENGUARD Gold certified for low chemical emissions. Use only the included mattress, add no toppers or padding, and stop at 25 lbs, 6 months, or the first push-up on hands and knees, whichever comes first.
Real reviews — what owners say
About 100 ratings at 4.6–4.7/5 (Babylist 4.6/5 across 101 ratings; Target 4.7/5 across 99 reviews — the same UPPAbaby.com pool syndicated to both, and heavily seeded by the Stellar Product Testing Panel free-product programme, so read it as one young, partly incentivised pool). Owners praise faster settling and longer sleep stretches, app control from bed (a standout in C-section recovery reviews), easy assembly, the mesh and washable mattress, and the storage basket. The complaints that matter: (1) a small but severe motion-mechanism tail — clicking/squeaking developing within weeks (one owner at seven weeks could hear it from the next room) and one family on its third Soma inside the baby’s first month after a mechanism failure and then squeaking; UPPAbaby replaced the units, and the 3-year warranty is the hedge — buy from an easy-exchange retailer and test every motion in week one. (2) The backlit control panel is too bright at night and its lights do not turn off — one owner covers it with a burp cloth. (3) Only 4 sounds, and several owners find the lowest volume still loud; Babylist’s guide flags the same sound complaints. (4) A slight jolt when some motions start, and finicky touch buttons that push owners to the app. (5) Big and heavy (~37 lbs, no wheels) — measure your bedside space first.
Price & FSA/HSA
$599.99 flat at UPPAbaby, Babylist and Target — no discount found, and it is not sold on Amazon. Context: the SNOO is $1,995 to buy (or about $1,053 to rent for six months, plus an optional $19.99/mo Premium) — the Soma costs $1,395 less with $0/mo after. The Maydolly smart bassinet (check #13) is $449.99 with brand-asserted-only certification. Running costs: essentially none — no subscription, no refills, no proprietary sacks; the waterproof mattress cover is sold separately.
FSA/HSA: Not eligible (bassinet).
The verdict
WORTH IT IF… you want motion soothing and accept that you are the cry detection. You get the broadest parent-controlled motion menu we have checked, an 8-hour run, verified third-party certification, a 3-year warranty and zero subscription at under a third of SNOO money. Not worth it if you want the bassinet to respond while you stay asleep, if your bedroom can’t fit a 33.8″-wide unit, or if a plain $150–$250 bassinet would do because your baby settles easily.
