What it is
A powder-coated steel diaper pail, 19.5 in tall, with a sliding top door, rubber seals and a childproof lock knob. No pedal, motor, filter or cartridge. Holds ~55 newborn diapers by the brand’s count (50 size-1, 41 size-2, 38 size-3, 23 size-5).
Claim check — “steel doesn’t absorb odor” and “no special bags”
“Steel doesn’t absorb odor”
True when closed — MommyHood101 rated it 10/10 and was very impressed even fully loaded, and BabyGearLab’s sniff test passed with the lid shut. But there is no inner seal or wrap, so a strong smell escapes while the sliding door is open; BabyGearLab also found odor build-up in the can it couldn’t clean out. Ubbi’s own FAQ concedes any pail “will smell when opened — the difference is it doesn’t smell when closed.”
“No special bags” is real — and it is the money story: any tall 13-gallon kitchen bag or cloth liner works, no refills ever — skip Ubbi’s own branded bags, testers found them flimsier and prone to tearing on removal. The 55-diaper capacity is newborn math: empty at least twice a week for odor, as Ubbi itself advises. The childproof lock only locks the sliding door — the main lid lifts without a lock (BabyGearLab) — and using the lock takes two hands.
Safety & recalls
No CPSC recall found for the Ubbi diaper pail (checked Oct 17, 2026). The only Ubbi recall on record is the 2019 Ubbi Connecting Bath Toys choking-hazard recall — a different product. Care rule that matters: dry cloth only, never water or cleaners — Ubbi says liquid causes condensation, mold and rust in the airtight pail, rust is the owners’ top long-term complaint, and the 3-year warranty can be declined for units not cared for per instructions. No foot pedal means deposits are a hand job — place it within arm’s reach of the changing table and always keep one hand on the baby.
Real reviews — what owners say
Target 4.1/5 across ~859 ratings; Babylist 4.4/5 across ~675 ratings (75% five-star). Praise repeats: closed-pail odor control, any-bag convenience, slim good-looking steel, lasts past diapers as a trash can. Complaints in order: the open-door whiff, rust if the dry-only rule is broken, dents on arrival (inspect and exchange), the rubber gasket popping out during bag changes, no pedal / two-hand lock, and full bags suctioning and tearing on removal.
Price & FSA/HSA
$79.99 list at Target and Babylist; colours drop to $69.99–$73.96, and Amazon has shown ~$65 in certain colours. Running cost is just kitchen bags you already own — versus continuous refill cartridges on Diaper Genie / Munchkin systems.
FSA/HSA: not eligible — standard baby gear, not a medical expense.
The verdict
WORTH IT IF you empty twice a week, follow the dry-cloth-only rule, and want off the refill treadmill. Not worth it if you need a foot pedal, expect the deposit moment to be smell-free, plan to wash it out with water, or mainly cloth-diaper (the small door is a squeeze for bulky diapers, per BabyGearLab).
