The pitch

the original wearable blanket — the hospital-default replacement for loose blankets in the crib

The catch

the inverted zipper takes practice at 3 a.m., and the real cost is the system — about two per size, roughly $210 across S/M/L

FSA/HSA

not eligible — sleep sacks are general sleepwear, not a qualified medical expense

What it is — the original wearable blanket

The original sleeveless zip-up wearable blanket that replaces loose blankets in the crib, sold for over 20 years. This is the arms-out SleepSack (not the SleepSack Swaddle): a roomy, extra-long sack with space for kicking and hip movement, “Back is Best” embroidery, and recognition from the International Hip Dysplasia Institute as Hip Healthy. Three fabrics: 100% Cotton, TOG 0.5; Micro-Fleece, TOG 1.0; SuperSoft Bamboo, TOG 1.5. Sizes run by weight and height: S 10–18 lbs / 23–26″, M 16–24 lbs / 26–30″, L 22–28 lbs / 30–35″, XL 26–36 lbs / 35–40″.

Claim check — the hospital-default design

“The #1 choice of hospitals” — used to model safe sleep in hospital nurseries

Substantially true, with a marketing asterisk on the number. HALO created this category and hospitals genuinely use the SleepSack to model safe sleep — but the exact hospital count is brand-reported and moves (1,700 in retail copy, 1,500+ in the company’s own press), so treat it as approximately-true marketing. The AAP alignment is the product: wearable blankets are what AAP guidance points to instead of loose blankets, and this is a plain non-weighted sack — an important detail, because the AAP recommends against weighted sleep products. One copy trap: HALO’s bamboo version markets a “weighted feeling, without unsafe weighted components” — it contains no added weight, and no buyer should pay the bamboo premium expecting a weighted effect.

Safety & recalls — none on this sack; two HALO recalls to keep separate

No recall of the current plain SleepSack found (checked Oct 17, 2026). Two HALO recalls belong to other products — don’t let either attach to this one, and don’t ignore them either. A 2013 recall of about 27,000 SleepSacks covered only the discontinued pink satin flower model sold at Babies R Us, whose petals could detach — so skip old secondhand sacks with sewn-on decorations. And a March 5, 2026 recall of about 45,000 HALO Magic Sleepsuits — a different padded transition suit from the same company, now HALO Dream Inc. — covers a zipper head that can detach (batches PO30592 / PO30641 / PO30685); not a SleepSack, but a fair reason to inspect the zipper on any HALO sleep garment. Fit rules: size strictly by weight/height with snug neck and arm openings so fabric can’t ride over the head, match TOG to the room, and keep it back / flat / firm / bare crib, no added blankets.

What owners say

Babylist names the cotton SleepSack its Best Sleep Sack Overall — affordable, soft, easy diaper changes — with two cons: the reverse zipper can be frustrating and some parents say the material wears out quickly. The ratings pools are strong: halosleep.com’s cotton listing runs 4.8/5 across 381 reviews (brand-collected) and Target’s cotton pool 4.6/5 across 457 ratings. Owners praise that it stays on all night and suits hot climates. The complaint pattern: aligning the inverted zipper at a squirmy baby’s neck (the bamboo version’s 2-way zipper fixes this), a minority durability tail on the lightweight cotton, and occasional loose shoulders when oversized — another reason the sizing rules above aren’t optional.

The money math & FSA/HSA

$34.99 for cotton and micro-fleece at halosleep.com and Target; $44.99 for bamboo. Cheaper sacks exist — Burt’s Bees ~$29.99, Hudson Baby ~$20.99 — and premium ones run $55+ (Kyte Baby). The real cost is the system: about two per size across Small/Medium/Large is roughly $210 new. That math makes secondhand unusually rational here — it’s a washable garment with no electronics — after a zipper and embellishment check (see the 2013 recall note above).

FSA/HSA: not eligible — sleep sacks are general sleepwear, not a qualified medical expense.
