The Doona concept with its worst flaws engineered out — a carrier that detaches to roughly 8–11 lbs and a better crash analysis — at Doona money for an average-not-leading crash margin and about nine months of use.

The pitch

an infant car seat that transitions to a stroller in one step, with a detachable light carrier and SensorSafe chest-clip alerts

The catch

carrier plus frame is about 20 lbs before the baby, the release handles and buttons take a month to learn, and practical use is about nine months

FSA/HSA

not eligible — car seats and strollers do not qualify under IRS Publication 502

What it is

An infant car seat whose carrier rides on a detachable wheeled stroller frame, sold with a stay-in-car base — pinned here as the standard DualRide with Carryall Storage in Boone Gray, not the Gold trim. The mechanics are the story, and they are not Doona mechanics: the wheels belong to a separate frame, and at the car you choose — lift carrier and frame off together for stroller mode, or detach the carrier and leave the frame docked in the base. That split can only happen at the base; mid-outing, carrier and frame are one piece. Model-year trap: the current side-impact model is rated 3–30 lbs and 15.7–32 in; the original 2023 model was 3–35 lbs — the label on the seat governs. Hardware includes a LockStrong belt-tensioning base with anti-rebound bar, push-on LATCH connectors, a built-in lock-off with a color-change indicator, 5 recline positions, a no-rethread harness, European belt routing for baseless installs, a UPF 50+ canopy, GREENGUARD Gold certification and SensorSafe Bluetooth chest-clip alerts on all trims. In the box: carrier/frame combo, base, Carryall storage bag and a parent cup holder. Total system weight: 29.0 lbs per Evenflo’s spec sheet.

Claims vs. reality

“Transitions to a stroller in one step” — the conversion is real; “one step” is generous. BabyGearLab named it “Best for Urban Families Who Walk” and praised strolling straight out of an Uber with no trunk stroller. But there are two different release handles depending on whether the frame travels or stays, two separate buttons for folding vs. unfolding the wheels that a long-term tester kept confusing, and Consumer Reports flags unlabeled levers. Evenflo’s own manual acknowledges a design flaw: the carry handle and canopy collide, and raising the handle drags the canopy open. The detachable carrier is the real headline, with an asterisk: Evenflo’s FAQ puts the carrier alone at about 8 lbs, but independent scales read 9 lbs (CSFTL), 10.5 lbs (BabyGearLab) and 11 lbs (Safe in the Seat) — print 8–11 lbs, not 8. With the frame attached, BabyGearLab measured 20.1 lbs, heavier than the Doona’s 17.2. SensorSafe is real but brand-evidenced: four app alerts (unsafe temperature, child unattended, unexpected unbuckling, buckled too long) that reviewers confirm fire — with no field data on false alarms or dropouts.

Safety & recalls

No CPSC or NHTSA recall naming the Shyft DualRide was found (Oct 26, 2026) — stated precisely, because two nearby recalls will scare a searcher: NHTSA recall 25C-003 lists a “Gold Shyft Travel System w/ LiteMax” (a different seat), and the Revolve180 LiteMax NXT recall touches “Shyft Intuiti” travel systems — neither is this product. The DualRide meets or exceeds FMVSS 213a/213b, is side-impact, rollover and temperature tested per the brand, and is FAA approved without the base. The honest asterisk is crash margin: BabyGearLab’s sled analysis scores it 6.8/10 — “largely average” — behind top dedicated infant seats at 8.8–9.0, but clearly ahead of the Doona’s 4.6. Consumer Reports puts crash protection at “Better,” its middle tier (the same tier as the Doona), with 5/5 fit-to-vehicle scores for LATCH and belt installs with the base. Installation is a genuine strength — belt 8.5, LATCH 7.5 at BabyGearLab — though its bubble level “showed okay, no matter what angle we tried.” No NHTSA ease-of-use star rating was found: treat it as unrated, not poorly rated. Expiration: 6 years from manufacture; replace after any crash.

Real reviews — what owners say

The owner pool is fragmented across trims and colorways — itself a finding — but the pattern across BabyGearLab, Consumer Reports, CSFTL, Babylist and mirrored Amazon reviews is consistent. Praise, specific and repeated: transfers that don’t wake the baby; strolling straight out of a rideshare with no trunk stroller; the detachable light carrier for stairs and short carries; a no-rethread harness that adjusts in seconds; dryer-safe seat pads; an easy, solid base install; and a genuinely good preemie fit — CSFTL fit every doll from preemie to 16 months, and the 3-lb minimum is 1 lb lower than the Doona’s. Complaints, equally consistent: the weight with the frame (about 20 lbs before the baby — not a C-section-recovery lift); the two-button, two-handle learning curve; the handle–canopy collision; a canopy BabyGearLab calls small for something that is also a stroller; and the manual stored in the base, so it is never with you in stroller mode while you are learning. A durability tail worth printing: Amazon reviews for the Gold trim (same mechanism family) include a November 2025 report of a wheel attachment failing at five months. No large single-listing pool exists to average.

Price & FSA/HSA

The price is a range wearing a list price as a costume. Amazon list is $549.99 for the pinned Boone Gray ASIN, and one tracked listing averages $546.35 — but Evenflo’s own store, read Oct 26, 2026, priced this colorway at $449.99 against a $599.99 compare-at, and recorded Amazon prices for this ASIN run from $205.26 to $629.99. Practical rule: $549.99 is the number to beat, not the number to pay — check Evenflo direct and both colorways first, and do not pay $599.99. Against the Doona+ at $550 (check #20), the DualRide at street price is the same money or less, and the included Carryall bag answers the Doona’s $45–$65 storage add-ons. The structural math is identical for both: roughly nine months of practical use — height, the 32-inch / 1-inch rule, ends it before 30 lbs for most babies — after which a convertible seat and a real stroller are still ahead of you. One more number: Evenflo’s stated warranty on this trim is a 90-day limited warranty — thin coverage on $550 of mechanism-heavy gear. FSA/HSA: not eligible — car seats and strollers do not qualify as medical care under IRS Publication 502.

The Doona concept with its worst flaws engineered out: a carrier that splits from its wheels to roughly 8–11 lbs (the Doona is 17.2 lbs, always), a no-rethread harness, storage in the box, and a better independent crash analysis — 6.8 vs. the Doona’s 4.6 at BabyGearLab — at Doona money, for an average-not-leading crash margin, a two-button learning curve, and about nine months of use.
